You're at the welcome screen. Follow these steps to get your Measurement ID.

🚀 Step-by-Step: Create GA4 Property

Step 1: Start Measuring

  1. Go to Google Analytics
  2. Click the blue "Start measuring" button
  3. You'll be taken to the account creation screen

Step 2: Create Account (if needed)

  1. Account Name: Enter a name (e.g., "My Business" or "Personal")
  2. Account Data Sharing Settings:
    • Leave all checked (recommended for best features)
    • Or uncheck if you prefer more privacy
  3. Click "Next"

Step 3: Create Property

  1. Property Name: Enter your website/project name (e.g., "GTM Learning" or "My Website")
  2. Reporting Time Zone: Select your timezone
  3. Currency: Select your currency
  4. Click "Next"

Step 4: Business Information

  1. Industry Category: Select the closest match (or "Other")
  2. Business Size: Select your size
  3. How you intend to use Google Analytics:
    • Check all that apply (Measure, Optimize, etc.)
  4. Click "Create"

Step 5: Accept Terms

  1. Review the Google Analytics Terms of Service
  2. Check the boxes to accept
  3. Click "I Accept"

🎯 Get Your Measurement ID

After creating your property, you'll see the Data Streams setup:

Step 6: Set Up Data Stream

  1. Platform: Select "Web"
  2. Website URL: Enter your website URL
    • For localhost: http://localhost
    • For production: Your actual domain
  3. Stream Name: Give it a name (e.g., "My Website")
  4. Click "Create stream"

Step 7: Copy Measurement ID

  1. You'll see a screen with your Measurement ID
  2. It looks like: G-XXXXXXXXXX
  3. Copy this ID - you'll need it for GTM!

Where to find it later:

  • Admin (gear icon) → Property → Data Streams → Click your stream → Measurement ID

  • Clicked "Start measuring"
  • Created account (or used existing)

  • Set up web data stream
  • Copied Measurement ID (format: G-XXXXXXXXXX)

🔗 Next Steps After Getting Measurement ID

Once you have your Measurement ID:

  1. Go back to GTM (tagmanager.google.com)
  2. Follow the GTM Setup Guide to:
    • Create GA4 Configuration Tag
    • Add your Measurement ID
    • Create event tags
    • Publish container

💡 Important Notes

Measurement ID Format

  • Always starts with G-
  • Example: G-ABC123XYZ
  • Different from Universal Analytics (UA) which starts with UA-

Localhost Testing

  • GA4 works with localhost
  • Use DebugView for real-time testing
  • Data will appear in reports (may take 24-48 hours)

Multiple Properties

  • You can create multiple properties
  • Each has its own Measurement ID
  • Use different IDs for different websites/projects

🐛 Common Issues

"Start measuring" button not working

  • Check if you're logged into the correct Google account
  • Try refreshing the page
  • Clear browser cache if needed

Can't find Measurement ID

  • Go to: Admin → Data Streams → Click your web stream
  • Measurement ID is shown at the top

Property creation failed

  • Make sure you have a Google account
  • Check if you've reached property limits (usually 50 per account)
  • Try a different browser
